Legal Officer - EmpowerLine Plus

Immaculate Maluza is a human rights lawyer and Consultant Legal Officer at the Gender and Justice Unit (GJU), where she serves as Co-Coordinator of the Irene M. Staehelin Foundation-funded EmpowerLine Plus Project. The project is supporting the expansion of the EmpowerLine model across eleven districts in Malawi, strengthening access to legal information, referral pathways, and survivor-centred support services. In her current role, Immaculate co-leads the coordination and implementation of project activities, with particular responsibility for the programme’s community liaison component. She works closely with community-based structures and project teams to strengthen grassroots legal empowerment and access to justice for women and marginalised communities. Immaculate has worked with GJU for several years across legal empowerment and access to justice initiatives. Her work has included support to legal clinics, mobile court sessions, intake assessments, IVR response services, and survivor-centred legal assistance. Alongside her work with GJU, she remains a Partner at Ellen Landon Law Partners, where she leads the firm’s Strategic Litigation and Human Rights Section. She has over nine years of litigation experience focused on gender justice, human rights, and access to justice for vulnerable groups. Immaculate holds an LLB (Hons) from the University of Aberystwyth and was called to the Bar of England and Wales through the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple after completing the Bar Professional Training Course at City Law School, London. She is also qualified to practise in Malawi through the Malawi Institute of Legal Education. She is a former President of the Women Lawyers Association (WLA), where she contributed to strategic litigation and advocacy on issues affecting women and vulnerable groups.
