our work

Research, Writing & Advocacy

GJU produces research, writing, and advocacy grounded in the lived realities of women, girls, survivors, and marginalised communities in Malawi. Our work connects legal analysis with community experience, using evidence to expose justice gaps, inform policy, strengthen service delivery, and support feminist movements. Through research studies, legal explainers, Pabwalo community dialogues, social media advocacy, and public legal resources, we make the law easier to understand, challenge systems that fail survivors, and support reform that is rooted in reality.

We focus on legal empowerment as one of the most powerful tools for advancing gender equality and social justice

Our activities

Research on Sexual Harassment and Sextortion in the Courts

We investigate the complex dynamics of sexual harassment and sextortion within the legal system.
Through rigorous research, we identify patterns, challenges, and institutional gaps that perpetuate injustice.
Our findings help inform policy and practice to ensure safer, more equitable legal environments.

Legal Articles and Papers

Our legal experts publish thought-provoking articles and academic papers that examine how legal systems affect marginalised communities.
These works contribute to global legal discourse while staying grounded in lived realities — bridging the gap between theory and practice.

Social Media Awareness Campaigns

We use digital platforms to amplify the voices of vulnerable groups and build public awareness.
Through visually engaging, informative campaigns, we spark conversation, shift perceptions, and promote inclusive, rights-based narratives.

GJU Civil Justice Needs Research

Our team conducts in-depth studies on the civil justice needs of marginalised communities in Malawi.
By uncovering barriers to access, we help shape reforms that create more inclusive and responsive legal systems.

COVID & AGYW Research

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we investigated its specific impact on Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW).
Our research highlights how crises disproportionately affect marginalised groups — and offers data-driven recommendations for future preparedness and advocacy.

Access to Justice Studies (UN Women Spotlight Initiative)

In collaboration with WOJAM and WLA under the UN Women Spotlight Initiative, we conducted national studies on access to justice.
Our work examines how gender-based violence and intersecting forms of discrimination affect legal access — supporting the development of evidence-based policies and programs.

Pabwalo – Community Town Hall

Pabwalo is our community town hall initiative, designed to bridge the gap between legal theory and lived experience.
These inclusive forums foster open dialogue between communities, legal professionals, and activists — creating a shared space for problem-solving, learning, and collective advocacy.

48 to Infinity

48 to Infinity is GJU’s feminist visibility initiative documenting Malawian women whose leadership, labour, and public contributions have too often been left out of digital history. The initiative responds to a simple but urgent problem: when women’s stories are not written, archived, cited, and made visible online, they are more easily erased from public memory and from systems increasingly shaped by digital knowledge. Through research, profile development, publication, and partnerships, 48 to Infinity strengthens the visibility of Malawian women and expands the record of who has shaped our communities, institutions, and movements.
