Legal Empowerment
At GJU, we believe legal empowerment is a fundamental step toward achieving gender justice and social equity. Our programs are designed to make the law accessible, understandable, and actionable for all — especially women and marginalized communities.

We focus on legal empowerment as one of the most powerful tools for advancing gender equality and social justice

Our activities
● Legal Clinics
We host free legal clinics where individuals can safely seek advice and support on a wide range of legal issues. Our legal professionals offer one-on-one consultations to help people understand their rights and explore available legal pathways — fostering trust and empowering communities to make informed decisions.
● GBV Clinic
Our specialized Gender-Based Violence (GBV) clinic offers:
• Confidential counselling
• Legal support
• Referrals to essential services
We aim to support survivors through the justice process while also working to prevent future violence.
● Strategic Litigation
We pursue legal cases with the potential to create systemic change. By challenging discriminatory laws and setting important legal precedents, we contribute to a more just and equitable legal system in Malawi.
● Legal Accompaniment
Navigating the legal system can be daunting — especially for those from underserved or marginalized backgrounds.
Our trained advocates accompany individuals through their legal journeys, offering guidance, moral support, and a consistent presence in court and legal proceedings.
● GBV Booklets
We produce accessible booklets designed to help survivors and the public understand how to recognize, respond to, and prevent gender-based violence.
These resources promote awareness, spark dialogue, and encourage action in communities across Malawi.
● Interactive Voice Response (IVR)
For people without internet access, our IVR system allows users to call in and receive legal information via voice menus. This tool extends our reach and ensures equitable access to justice-related knowledge, even in remote areas.
● MalawiLII – Open Legal Access
We manage and update MalawiLII, Malawi’s free legal information platform. Through it, we provide access to:
• Statutes and case law
• Legal commentaries and tools
• Resources for lawyers, activists, and the general public
